It is essential to have experience in presenting complex datasets and telling stories in clear, innovative ways to your audience. Experience of finding stories hidden in data. Applicants should have a portfolio of relevant work using data, numbers, statistics and interactives in journalism. Experience of writing scrapers and using programming languages (e.g. SQL) and statistical software (e.g. R) is desired. Confidence in working with HTML/CSS and have an understanding of how JavaScript, PHP and Python work, even if you are not writing code yourself. Ideally you will have experience of managing or coaching others.Telegraph Media Group is currently recruiting for a Head of Data Journalism to join our Digital Media team within our Editorial Department. We are looking for someone to make the Daily Telegraph known for excellence and speed in telling stories through data visualisations, interactive and using data. You will manage the existing data journalist, and work with our in-editorial team of 5 developers to drive innovation. You will run a separate Telegraph site section and Twitter feed to showcase your work. Key responsibilities will include: Produce a range of data-led stories from analysis, to quick-hit pieces, to longer-term investigations. Manage the data journalist to do the same. Work with colleagues on wider newsroom-wide projects around known events. Work with the Editorial Development team on interactives and Design team on visualisations. Manage a dedicated social media account with flair. To produce and develop data-driven living graphs around key statistics for anyone in editorial to use.
